Carniny Youth 2014s overcame their opening hurdle in the South Belfast Youth League Cup with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Doyle.
In a match punctuated by heavy hail showers at Ulidia Playing Fields, Carniny were given the perfect start with an early goal with Alex firing a shot high into the net as the ball pinballed around the penalty area.

However, rather than the goal settling Carniny, instead it was Doyle who gained the upper hand in the latter part of the first half.
Goalkeeper Jake R had one of his busier mornings of the season, showing good handling in the conditions and also making two notable saves, flicking one effort over the crossbar and then diving to his right to push an effort around the post.

The second half followed a similar pattern and all the boys, led by captain Mark at the back, had to dig deep with countless tackles and blocks.
The second period produced few clear-cut chances and Carniny showed great determination to see out the game and set up a quarter-final tie against Holywood Youth.

Despite it being far from the Reds' best display of the season, the boys discovered the importance of simply making it into the next stage in knockout competition and they remain well in contention in both the league and cup.

Man of the match was James, who showed tremendous tenacity and industry in a busy midfield.
