After their midweek victory in the first round of the Zala Cup, Carniny’s seniors faced a tough test against First Division outfit Harryville Homers in the next round.
The opening 20 minutes saw little to separate the two sides, with Carniny more than matching their higher-league opponents, though neither team seriously troubled the opposition goal.
The deadlock was broken on 24 minutes when Dean Wright fed Aaron Johnston down the left flank. Johnston cut inside and finished confidently to put the home side 1–0 ahead.
Harryville hit back in the 39th minute, a long ball over the top finding their winger, who lobbed the advancing Carniny keeper to level the score. Wright almost restored the lead immediately, but his strike was tipped away by the Homers’ goalkeeper.
Four minutes into the second half, the visitors went in front after a free-kick ricocheted off a Carniny defender and fell kindly for a Homers player to slot home from close range.
Carniny showed their resilience, with Jay Peacock embarking on a driving run from his own half before playing in Johnston, who calmly finished for his second of the match to make it 2–2.
With no further goals in normal time, the tie went into extra time. Harryville proved clinical, scoring in each half of the additional period to secure the win.
Despite the 4–2 defeat, Carniny produced a spirited display against their First Division opponents, showing they could compete at a higher level.
