Carniny opened the scoring in this Rainey cup tie only two minutes into the game when Dean Wright capitalized on a mistake from the Newport defence, weaving his way into the box and round the keeper to slot home to make it one-nil to the visitors. Only three minutes later Carniny had another chance with Wright feeding the ball through the Newpark defence to Sean Byrne, only to see his shot go over the top of the crossbar. The visitors then had another chance through Jake Armstrong who broke into the box but had his shot saved at the near post by Colin McCaughern and the Newpark goal. Newpark settled into the game and were hitting Carniny on the break, causing problems with McKillop in the Carniny goal forced into a couple of good saves. On the halfway mark Newpark got an equalizer, after being awarded a penalty, which Ryan Gallagher converted. Just before halftime, they took the lead when the visitors allowed Jordon Lynn to cross in from the left flank with Alan Wilson at the back post nodding back across the goal for Michael Watson to poke home from close range.
Carniny came out in the second half and got their equalizer after keeper McCaughern brought down Wright inside the box and the former stepped up to score the resultant spot kick. The remainder of the game was fairly equal with Noah Scullion unlucky to settle the game from a free kick that saw McCaughern pull off a super save in the dying minutes taking the game to extra time. There was little to talk about in the two periods of extra time and with the score even at ft, penalty kicks decided the tie. Carniny went on to take the win with successful spot kicks from Wright, Johnston, White, Byrne and Scullion seeing them win 5-4 to progress to the next round
