Carniny were determined to put in a good performance in this league game against Ballykeel at the Showgrounds after an under par showing in the Zala Cup the previous week. So it was the home side who took the game to their visitors in the early stages of the match and they were rewarded when good combination play from Danny McComb and John Costello saw Costello ride a tackle on the left hand side of the box and forced his way further in to score from an acute angle to give the Amateurs the lead. Carniny then went on to double their lead with Matthew McComb collecting a Gary Taggart free kick in the box, turned to get round his marker and tucked the ball neatly into the far corner. It looked like staying that way to the break until Danny McComb got on the end of a David Johnston cross at the back post to give the home side a three goal lead at the break.
Carniny expected the visitors to come at them from the start of the second half but a throw in from Micky Hagan sent Danny McComb off down the left flank right to the by line where he cut in from an acute angle past the Keel keeper for his second and Carniny's fourth. This brought Ballykeel back in to the game as they applied some pressure to the Amateurs but the back four of Calderwood, Dunlop, White and Hagan held them at bay for periods. Niall Shannon in the Carniny goals also had to be alert on a few occasions as he was forced to clear the danger away. With the pressure the visitors won a few corners and Dale Mitchell scored directly from one of them to reduce the deficit. The midfield pairing of Costello and Taggart was working hard for the home side and on 80 minutes Taggart put David Johnston through to see him net number five. As the game drew to a close Taggart was on hand again to deliver another through ball this time to Kevin Coogan who took it straight down the middle making no mistake slotting past the keeper to make it 6-1 at the final whistle.
