U14 Carniny AYFC 1-3 Newington
SPONSORED by Milanos Ballymena
Missing several key players due to school rugby commitments, the boys battled hard against the wind in the first half. Newington took the lead from a short corner when a high shot from the edge of the box flew into the top corner. The boys continued to battle, and Ben and PK were solid in defence, and Robbie was making tackles all across the pitch. The equalising goal came from Brandon who hit a lovely shot from twelve yards out and it gave the Newington keeper no chance. The score was 1-1 at half time.
When the teams turned around, Carniny had the wind behind them, and they pushed forward looking to take the lead, but it was Newington who scored their second this time from a free kick wide on their left. The ball was played short and again a high shot beat Vlad in nets to give Newington the lead against the run of play. Carniny seemed to lose heart, and they struggled to create chances. Harry and Brandon did have opportunities to score, but they were quickly closed down by strong defending. Newington sealed the win ten minutes from the end when the defence failed to clear the ball and a low shot beat Vlad at the near post. This was a tough game for the boys against a strong Newington team but the boys will have to learn to compete more right across the pitch.
