The Senior team had a great weekend after lifting the Galgorm Trophies Cup after an exciting finale to the game at the Showgrounds

Shootout Glory for Carniny as Towers left heartbroken
Galgorm Trophies Cup Final
Carniny AYFC 2 Seven Towers 2
(Carniny won 4-3 on penalties)

Seven Towers will be wondering how they did not leave the Showgrounds with the cup as they twice conceded in the dying minutes of normal time and extra time to be denied the win and then they watched on as Carniny Captain Jake Armstrong struck the winning penalty to win the first trophy in the BSML for his side.

Both sides worked hard in the opening exchanges to settle on the big pitch with Jay Peacock having the first shot in anger as he looked to give Carniny the lead. Towers seemed to settle better though with the experience of Leslie McCaughern at the back and Darren Burgoyne in midfield helping them gain control of the game. On the half hour mark the game burst into life when Conor Graham played a neat one two with Ryan Walsh and drove into the box and as he was about to pull the trigger was fouled with a spot kick awarded. The Towers midfielder Graham dusted himself down and made no mistake to fire past Ross McKillop in the Carniny goal to send Towers in a goal to the good at the break.

The second half saw Carniny looking to take the game to Towers, but they were finding Towers in stubborn mood as the Division Three outfit looked in no mood to surrender their lead. Towers always looked a threat on the break with the pace and industry of Ronan McKillop and Charlie Metrusty causing Carniny problems. As the game wore on it looked like the first half penalty was going to be enough for Towers to win the Cup with their defence impressive in limiting Carniny and any time they were breached young keeper Jamie Clarke came off his line well to deal with the danger. With the game moving into stoppage time though disaster struck for Towers as a Mark Logan throw to Jake Armstrong saw him lose his marker, found some space 20 yards out and his shot took a deflection and looped over Jamie Clarke in the Towers goal to draw the game level. This goal was not the final action of the 90 minutes though as Carniny keeper Ross McKillop somehow made an unbelievable full length save to deny Eoghan Daly a dramatic late winner with a spectacular volley as the game moved into extra time.

Both sides looked tired in the first period of extra time with little in the way of goal mouth action with defences on top. Jay Peacock wentt closest seeing his shot from inside the box hit the post and rebound away. Halfway through the second period of extra time Towers looked to have struck the winner for the second time when Dean Dunlop pounced on a loose ball before rounding the outrushing McKillop to slot home and send the Towers crowd wild. There was a sting in the tale though in the final minute of extra time when a long free kick into the box for Carniny from Jake Armstrong was headed down by Benji Agnew for Dean Wright to sweep home the equaliser and the game was to be decided in a shootout.

Towers went first in the shootout with Dean Dunlop making no mistake, and then keeper Jamie Clarke handed them the initiative as he saved from Aaron Johnston. The Carniny men didn't waste any of their next kicks with Agnew, Wright, Craig all converting. Towers Captain Darren Burgoyne was next up for their last kick, but Man of the Match Ross McKillop brilliantly denied him to leave Jake Armstrong with the chance to win the match and the Carniny Captain made no mistake to make the score 4-3 and win the Cup for Carniny.

After the final whistle Jacqui McWilliams of Galgorm Trophies presented the Cup to Captain on the day Jake Armstrong and Club Captain John Costello as the celebrations began.

Thanks to all the clubs parents, youth players and coaches who came to support the lads on the day. A crowd of 473 attended the game who were treated to an exciting finale at the end.
